May 6, 2006
Activities/Actions:
  • Biked the 18-mile lakefront Bike trail (total of around 35 mile for today ride)

  • Frisbee with the kids and P' Lek

Stat:

30 mins biked to downtown before the tour; tour for 2 hours; biked for another 1 1/2 hrs or so.

Course condition: Nice, but a bit chilly. The sky is clear; the lake is emerald green/dark navy blue.

Note and reflections:
Today 35 mile bike refreshes and energizes me to gain a new momentum power. Since awaked at 9 pm I have been out in the sun most of the day. Biking to downtown to catch a Grant Park tour at 10 hurries me off for out-door activities. Though sunshine gives plenty of lights, it cannot warm the chilly wind up much. I wish I brought my windbreaker with me. The tour starts at North garden of the Art Institute of Chicago, walking south to Major Logan Monument. Then we take the North path along Columbus Drive to the stop at President Court (where Lincoln sits). More on the tour to come.

To the east a cloudless sky meets a dark navy blue current of Lake Michigan. Unsurprisingly, this invites Chicagoans and visitors alike to experience this wonderful day. Passing through dog-walkers, rollerbladers and parents pushing a baby stroller, I am cruising along this busy lakefront path, leaving the parade of Polish Constitution Day behind. The north section of lakefront path seems to be busier than the south one, which makes it more welcome to bike, at least to me, because more people make atmosphere livelier (at least for this case). Most yuppies leave in this area of the city; girls are nicer looking here than beaches around Hyde Park. Though, a few people are playing on beaches due to this chilly wind (and probably the beach has not opened yet). I see Geoff biking south near Ohio St. Beach; he is probably coming for a weekend bike too.

Along the way to the end of lakefront trail, all parks are filled with kids and adults enjoying their sport activities. Kids are completing in their soccer match surrounded by a crowd of cheering parents. All baseball parks are also filled with groups of boys and men. I traverse my way back after I reach the end of the trail at Kathy Osterman Beach. Many pairs of couples are laying down; some're hugging; some're reading.

On the way back, I stop at Argyle Street to get Vietnamese sandwiches and some groceries. This is a quick stop since I don't want to park my bike outside for too long. I had a bad experience when I lost my friend's nice bike two summers ago. Biking back south faces stronger gusts of wind than that due north this morning. I am hoping that the way back would be a nice ride since the wind created some friction ealier. I should have known better not to hope like this since it is just a slim chance to get such a luck. Similarly, for running you hope for the wind to die down on the way back, but right after you turn back wind hits you in the fact again.

In the evening I take the kids to play Frisbee. We walk to the Point and meet P' Lek there. Though the decreasing temperature blows chilly wind hitting our body, running to catch Frisbee warms ourselves up to enjoy Frisbee. We throw back and forth for ~ 40 minutes, when we have to go back because of the poor shivering Kimmy who has not run much.

Today has been a very good day for me. It seems a good way to reward myself.

(the 10-point scale)

Note and reflections:
Following no other sports (even running), sometimes I hardly have anything to comment on those sport stories discussed over dinner table. Though, I still think that it is just like a thing that I think that it does not make much different to me either I follow it or not. That I like Running does not mean that I do know all runners, records, and etc..; I just run for my health--selfishly for myself. A similar applies to squash... Well come back to sport talk... it does not mean that people on the dinner table conversion have to turn a story to a running topic (while I am sitting quietly) since they (even I) might not have much to say about it either. This is just a thought from a dinner table talk tonight.

It is likely true that watching professional (or a better) players may help you improve your style. Most of time, you can really do improve when you actually play with a better person. Hey, watching sport is an enjoyment, right?

Week 2 Thursday

May 4, 2006
Activities/Actions:
  • Biked to lab
  • Ran with Wayne and Josh on our usual 5 mile lakeshore Path.
  • Squash for 4 games with P' Lek and P' Tee. It was a tiring one; I played hard again. Couldn't help it.

Stat:
5 miles, 50:00 (10:00/mile)

Course condition: It was a bit chilly, but still a nice run. Windy on the way back but not strong wind.

How I felt:

How hard did I work? 5 for run; 8/9 for squash.
(the 10-point scale)

Note and reflections:
Hope for a run in the morning... Hope again... I did not get up until 9:30. Too bad ... but I had a run in the evening. After two evening without exercises, I felt a bit of in need to run! Though I have been still recovering from sickness, I wanted to run real bad... Here comes; I was running 5 miles again today but no really tired at all since I was just jogging along the way. This nice run cheered me up!

I played hard on squash tonight. I felt that I was not 100% of my body strength. I need to listen to my body and not do this again..... For hydration, I probably did not do good today. Well, next time... need to watch for it.

I am leaning towards allergy rather a cold since it does not make any sense to me to catch a cold from a bit rain on Monday night. Anyway, this two day ichy and aches do bother me a lot. Anyhow, I work full time today, not taking a nap like yesterday (hehe, part due to the fact that I did not take any medicine). I hope tomorrow will be nicer. I will bring the medicine home tonight so that I will get a good sleep.

Note and reflections:
I was wondering whether it is a cold or allergy that causes my illness. Today is a nice to run; it is warm (~70F) without sun or wind., but I cannot run today. Need to listen to my body and don't push too hard. Maybe I can start running tomorrow morning. Hope Hope.

Anyhow, I took a cup of cold medicine bought 4 month ago when I went to Mammoth Cave National Park. After the cold medicine seeped through my body (including my brain), I felt so sleepy and took 3 hour nap. Woke up around 6:30 and came back to lab, working until now (12a). I gotta go back home and sleep now. Hope hope for a better tomorrow!

Note and reflections:
After a nice dinner at Ceder of Lebanon (which filled me up), I could not do any exercises. Today I felt a bit sick. I suspected that this was resulted by biking home in a pouring rain nigth and I did not take a shower after that. :( I hope this will not get worse.

Note and reflections:
T-H and P-L came running with us in a shorter path loop. It was a nice to get starting running for them. I hope that they will continue running. At least T-H seems to set a goal to run regularly with us. Today was a nice and easy run through the Park. Bob-o-link meadow offers a nice 1/2 mile path and tricks one to think as if one is running in countryside.

Week 1. This Week Highlights

Highlights/accomplishments for the week:
Crazylegs and the Jackson Park Paths highlight this week run. The former offers a fun race and an opportunity to see some friends and the latter gives a nice running trail. I set a new recorded pace at 7:33 mins/mile at Crazylegs, which is the accomplishment of the week!

Actions for next week:
  • Continuing training at my regular pace and probably add some new speedwork.
  • Thinking of joining SF half marathon with P' Kor. This will be a fun time in SF to run over the Golden Gate Bridge. Think about this.
  • Keep track on Hydration
